The two compulsory requirements to work at sea the STCW ’10 basic training course and the seafarer’s medical certificate (also known as ENG1)
We highly recommend also doing an accredited junior stewardess / junior deckhand course, Food and Hygiene Course, Small Powerboat and Rib Master and VHF courses.

The STCW ’10 is A safety course which is the minimum legal requirement for all crew working at sea. It includes basic fire prevention and firefighting, personal survival techniques, personal safety and social responsibilities and elementary first aid. At Trilogy we include an additional module called Designated Security Duties in our STCW ’10.

An ENG1 is another name for a seafarer’s medical certificate. This certificate confirms that you are medically fit to work on sea-going ships and you don’t have a medical condition which could be a danger to other crew and or passengers.
ENG1 certificates are issued by the network of MCA Approved Doctors in the UK and overseas. Other seafarer medical certificates which are accepted by vessels is the Norwegian Seafarers Certificate as well as the South African Maritime Associate Seafarers Certificate. Here in Durban, you book your seafarers medical certificate from Shipmed which is located near Entabeni Hospital in Glenwood.

Working on a superyacht is first and foremost a hospitality job. Any experience at a high-end hospitality establishment will be very beneficial. Additional skills such as beauticians / masseuse, dive instructor, medical personnel / nurse, water sports instructors, mechanical knowledge, carpentry work, engineering abilities, sailing experience, gym / yoga instructors is also beneficial.

No! This is a professional industry that is looking to hire professional crew. Yacht captains and owners are looking to hire professionals who have work and life experience to offer and are able to add to the guests’ overall enjoyment of their vessel through their professional conduct and skills. If you have just finished school and are interested in working on yachts, we recommend spending some time honing skills which would be required to work on a yacht.
-
The legal age requirement to work at sea is 16 so you could potentially do your STCW ’10 but please bear in mind, that this course has a validity of 5 years after which you will need to do a refresher. For the GUEST accredited courses, you need to be 18 years or older.

Please understand that this is a professional industry which is looking to hire professional crew to work onboard. The hours and long and the demands can be intense. There is incredible pressure to not only meet guests’ expectations but to exceed them! What you see on social media and reality tv does not reflect what it is really like to work on a superyacht.

We do not assist with job placements or provide positions for students. We do however guide our students through how to craft a great CV for your yachting career, how to apply for visas and where to go to look for work.
-
Occasionally green crew (i.e.: people with no experience working on yachts) are employed from their home country but these are few and far between and if you want to optimize your chances of getting employed on a yacht you will need to go to one of the yachting hubs. We will advise you during your course where to go based on your passport and visa situation.

For ALL seafarers, the basic STCW ’10 is needed. Cruise liners and recruiters will often ask for a ship security certificate too. The DSD which we offer as part of our STCW ’10 covers this requirement.
