Super Yacht Industry

International Travel Talk and SuperYacht Industry Update 2.0

It’s November!!! One more month until Christmas and not long until the end of the year. While a lot of people are just waiting for the calendar to click over and kiss 2020 goodbye, we are focusing on finishing the year strong and squeezing every last drop out of 2020.

So, we have blogs to write, courses to attend and CVs to improve before the next med season skips round the corner. Let’s get going, we’ve got this, do you?

So if you didn’t know, a few weeks back we hosted a zoominar (webinar on zoom) with some of the superyacht industries best advisors on what exactly is happening in superyacht industries and what people looking for jobs can do while they wait. It was such a fantastic session and we really learnt so much.
If you never did catch that zoominar, you can head to our previous blog and watch the session and have a glance at the recap of anything you may have missed.

International Travel Talk and SuperYacht Industry Update 2.0

In the first zoominar, we announced that we would do another session with some of our speakers after the announcement of the countries that were considered high-risk and no-fly zones. And Once again if you weren’t able to attend that session we have done a recap so that can keep up with what is happening.

The Recap:

What is it about:

In this Zoominar, Lauren From Trilogy and Sandra from Yacht Purser, host Jackie from SA Yachties and Lara from Lara travel as they discuss the current circumstances revolving around superyachting, consulates that are open, how to obtain visas and what European countries are allowing people to come.

Part 1: Lara Casasola From Lara Travel.

  • As countries continue to rise in infections, they implement new rules that travellers have to follow.

  • Europe is starting to close up borders. If you are in Europe and your Visa allows it, It is recommended that you stay in Europe as if you come back to South Africa, you may find it difficult to return.

  • Most of Europe is not allowing leisure seafarer work, only merchant work.

  • Italy is issuing visas however they are visas specific for transit. In other words, you can obtain a Schengen visa but you cannot stay in Europe for tourist regions.

  • When it comes to booking your flight, you need to check with Lara Travel as a lot of airlines are showing that they are flying but are not actually.

  • There are no longer repatriation flights going, they have all been cancelled.

  • In regards to the Covid test and Quarantine. The majority of Countries are asking for tests 72 hours before flying but some ask for 48 hours before. However, it is a standard for everyone to get a test done before flying however the hours before depending on country rules.

  • It is recommended that when booking flights or applying for visas, you do it with a reputable specialized company. So as to avoid mistakes, misinformation or losing money because of a cancelled flight or incorrect details.

Part 2: Jackie Naude from S.A Yachties

  • Consultants are open: France, Spanish in Cape Town (Spanish in Pretoria is not), Italian, Greece (Cape Town yes, Joburg no), Germany, Netherlands (Close for Seafarers)

  • All these Consultants are only currently issuing visas to those who are employed.

  • Each Consultant in the different cities operates differently and therefore issuing at different times.

Part 3: US Visa

  • What is the difference between a C1D Visa and B1B2 Visa? C1D visa is for commercial SeaFarers, those that are on cruise ships and commercially registered vessels. If you work on a SuperYacht that is in the USA, you need a B1B2 Visa. B1 is for Business, B2 is for Tourism.

  • Most Embassy won’t grant you a B2 visa unless you specify why you need it.

  • Embassy intention is not to relocate to the U.S.

  • Looking for work (dock-working) in the U.S without an American Passport is illegal.

Part 4: Questions

  • At the moment, visas aren’t being issued for the green crew because it falls under tourist category,

  • Don’t lose hope if you haven’t found anything yet. Yachting is all about leveraging your network.

In Closing.

Again, we are going to leave it there because we really want you to watch the video as this was a recap and there are plenty of helpful tips you can use.

We just want to publicly thank Lara, Jackie, and Sandra for taking the time to meet with us and discuss what is happening right now. We understand that maybe this wasn’t what you were expecting to hear, but we wanted to remind you that there is hope, that people are looking for crew and with proper preparation and perseverance, you can make the connections you need to secure a place on a Superyacht.

Your next step.
