Know your linens: Thread Count and what it all means
The first and most important thing to understand about thread count is it is not a measure of quality. Yarn quality, finishing process, fabric construction and weave are all important considerations that affect the durability, quality and handle of the linen.
That doesn’t mean that thread count doesn’t matter. When you understand what makes a quality sheet, thread count is an important piece of information to have. But to understand the way in which it matters you first have to get an idea of what exactly thread count means.
We reached out to our friends at Heirlooms Linens (https://heirlooms-linens.com ) and they explain thread count as follows:
This is measured by threads per inch which defines the coarseness or fineness of fabric. It is measured by counting the number of threads contained in 1 square inch including the warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal thread). The higher the thread count the higher number of threads per square inch and the finer the weave.
As mentioned above, the weave also is an important factor when looking at the quality of linens. Last week we spoke about weave so as a quick recap:
Sateen weave – weaving using threads that are mercerised to create a smooth finish on the woven fabric with a soft sheen.
Percale weave – the threads are not usually mercerised to create a cool crisp fabric with a matte finish.
Mercerisation transforms the cotton fibres into a smoother, more cylindrical structure, giving the fabric extra sheen and lustre.
Ultimately when choosing bed linen, it is always best to consult with professional companies who can guide you through the process and give you honest, relevant information. If you choose the right quality from the beginning, and treat it with care, your linens will wear well and last many years.
